Name Recognition

We recently spoke with a top photographer who was casting a major advertising campaign. It paid very well.

The photographer was waiting for his connection in a Minneapolis airport and opened a local magazine and saw a local model who would be perfect for his ad campaign. Unfortunately, the page did not list the model's name.

The photographer returned to Los Angeles and made an effort to contact the business who had placed the ad. The photographer send two emails and left a voicemail with the company stating that he wanted to hire the "model shown in your ad."

The company never returned the photographer's calls or emails, so he had to hire some other model for his ad campaign.

So, there is some broke guy somewhere in Minneapolis who has no idea that he missed out on a trip to Los Angeles, a lot of money and a chance to go on to bigger and better things - because he forgot to ask the company who ran the ad - to list his name in the ad.

We think name recognition is a top priority when starting out as a new model, new actor, or any field that requires notoriety or name recognition. Dumbbell Exercises for Aspiring Models

Going to the gym to lift weights and get a developed six pack is an everyday requirement for male models. However, with Auditions, call-backs, day jobs, testing with photographers and general hussling for the next modeling job, sometimes it is difficult to get to the gym.

This is where dumbbell exercises can help. With a basic set of dumbbells, it is possible to maintain a workout plan whenever a model cannot hit the gym.

Usually a model can get a basic workout in with only 35 pound, 40 and 50 pound dumbbells.

It's hard out here for a... Male Model?

Have you ever heard the saying, "It's hard out here for a pimp". Whoever thought that up was on some good drugs and quite mistaken. What he should have said was, "Its hard out here for a male model". Honestly, male models have it twice as hard then females. The whole weight thing has to be ten times more difficult and a million times more complicated. You can't send out an anorexic looking male model and get positive results, he might even get laughed at. Male models have a double standard because even though they have to be thin, they still have to keep up with their masculine features- to a limit. Male models have to be toned, and muscular- but not to muscular, (no one wants a body building Arnold Schwarzenegger look-a-like) because they still have to be thin and presentable. Some one too strong is intimidating and it might make viewers fill uncomfortable. O! and FYI the clothes probable wouldn't fit. Just thinking about it sounds so exhausting. I'd simply give up, or have a sex change.
For women its so much easier: the thinner the better or go plus size, but for Men being thin is crucial but its so much more than just loosing weight and having a slim figure. Most men can appreciate a healthy individual with a muscular body because with male modeling- its all about the right body type. Designers, when hiring models, are after more than just a pretty faced because, believe me sweet heart, the face can be fixed. Designers need a specific body type that fits the "look" they need to portray. For some designers the whole, "I'm on crack and haven't eaten a week" "look"... might work. For other designers the tanned, great abs, beach boy look is essential. The list goes on and on. Just exactly how do male models know what to expect when going to casting call? One should ask himself, "Today, am I going to be a tall, skinny preppy boy, or am i going to be the rough, muscular gangster that no one wants to mess with?" Who's ever going to know?

Kellan Lutz was born and raised North Dakota, the city didn’t have much to do besides playing games at the local arcade, hunting, or sledding in the snow. Although Kellan Lutz had a simple country upbringing he has done more in 21 years than most people ever do in a lifetime. He enjoys sky diving, parasailing, motor cross and white water rafting.

Kellan Lutz’s family moved to Arizona when he was 14. Kellan is the middle child of six brothers and one sister. Did you tune into Manhunt this season on the Bravo Channel? Manhunt: The Search for America's Most Gorgeous Male Model turned America on to the world of male modeling by focusing the camera on the ever neglected world of male models with the first-ever search for the hottest male model. Unsuspecting men were plucked from the streets and invited to participate in a series of challenges to determine who had the looks, style, stamina and charisma to be a male supermodel. Manhunt: Consisted of eight, one-hour episodes and followed twenty men as scouts plucked them from America's streets, bars, gyms and colleges to see if they had the look, the fire and the style to be a model. Once chosen, the finalists travel around the United States to compete against each other in a series of challenges.

But a recent ad which featured him endorsing condoms, was condemned in Tel Aviv due to his sexual prefrence! The public transportation company, Dan Bus, refused public display of the ad. They obviously felt that, as a major company, transporting over 600,000 thousand citizens on a daily basis, supporting a gay advertisement would be entirely to risky.

Such controversy is not limited to foreign places. It has also been prevalent right here in the United States of America! BMW, Subaru, and Volvo have all encountered relevant issues, but each practiced varied approaches. Subaru and Volvo have both embraced the gay community by creating advertisements aimed directly at their audience. On the other hand, BMW refuses to follow the open-minded techniques. Despite their marketing in the gay communities, the BMW North America company is unwilling to provide domestic-partner benefits for their GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) Employees.

Such actions by any country proves that no matter how popular a celebrity may be, or how good or educational the cause may be, if it is too risky or does not embody what a general society deems appropriate, they may face prejudice.

Whenever a male model who wants to act receives a casting notice or audition notice, the producers put very little information in the audition notice about the production. They might provides "sides" - which are lines actors read at auditions.

Usually, they only list a short amount info for each character they are casting.

For example: "Teddy, 18-24 male, caucasian. Frat boy type. Teddy is the high school jock who learns a lesson about respect after his father dies"

That's it. That is all an actor has to draw upon.

Trouble is: insecure actors and models always ask for more info before they proceed - wanting more details. They say: "I will call you later to get more information".

However, there is no more info.

Producers do not have a vested interest in telling their competition about their production or print campaign - just to "convince" an actor to submit initial pics. If talent do not want to do the job, they can turn it down later - after the producer tells them more about the role.

If you are a beginning actor or model, submit for the role and decide the details later. Asking for details early on makes more work for your agent or manager - and he is likely to tend to push roles in the future to actors who do not make extra work for him.

It doesn't pay to sign up with modeling agencies that advertise a need for male models.

Do you see that ad every day? Why would any organization advertise for male models in a newspaper's classified section each and every day? Why would they want an unlimited number of people to respond to their ads? Remember, it takes months to develop a male model's career. So, if they key accepting new guys, they we be continually developing new careers and never earning efficient revenue from the developed talent.

There are not enough male modeling jobs in a small market such as the midwest to support thousands or even hundreds of eager people who respond to open ads. For example, if a modeling agency accepts two applicants a day for five days a week, for 52 weeks a year, they would have 730 male models!

While a legitimate modeling agency will always be adding a few new male models to its rolls, it will not be to their advantage to accept every applicant. They are too busy booking their experienced male models to interview and groom hundreds of inexperienced young guys!

All the cities combined in a midwestern state do not have a fashion talent booking market comparable to New York, Miami or Milan. Midwestern male models must compete for a limited number of male modeling jobs. While a male model in the Midwest can use professional male modeling as a way to supplement regular income, chances are it will take him a long time to earn enough to return a $450-$800 initial investment in expensive portfolios.

Male modeling conventions hold "open calls" to locate people and select a "few" prospects. This makes young guys get their hopes up - with the aim of getting their wallets open. Organizers tell the "finalists" that they need to pay a $600 fee to attend a modeling convention featuring big city male modeling agents brought in from larger markets.

Modeling agents from top modeling agencies in larger cities attend these conventions because they get a free vacation out of it. They rarely choose young guys from these modeling conventions.

Potential male models can reach the same agents simply by mailing simple modeling photos to the agents' home offices. (A directory of male modeling agencies in the U.S. can be purchased from Peter Glenn Publications by calling 1-800-223-1254.) If a modeling agent is interested, he or she will fly the prospect in for an interview.

The bigger question is if you are willing to leave your job at Target and your girlfriend to go live in New York or Los Angeles to pursue a modeling career?

Small-time Modeling Agencies Sucker Young Guys into Assembly Line Shoots

Some modeling agencies in small markets who make their money off naive young guys may fly in a male model photographer from a major market such as New York or Los Angeles to impress naive young guys who want to model. The modeling agency pays the photographer $25 - $100 to photograph multiple male model. However, the agency charges the male model $400-$450 for the shoot. Male models are hurriedly photographed with a dozen or more other guys during a short period of time. This leaves little time for special attention to any one male model.

A good modeling portfolio includes different styles of photographs created by different male model photographers. Photographs in a portfolio should not all be photos from the same model photographer.

True Life: I'm moving to New York

If any of you guys watched MTV's show True Life: I'm moving to New York, you probably saw the dumb aspiring model name Josh. Josh was an aspiring model from Wausau, Wisconsin that had an agent in New York.

There are many male models who would have jumped at the opportunities that Josh was offered. But unfortunately some guys are not as smart and appreciative as others. Throughout the whole show, Josh does many stupid things that makes you just want to slap him. One of the idiotic things he did was fall asleep in a restaurant which caused him to be late for a modeling booking. Who on earth does that!? It's one thing to over sleep -- but to fall asleep in a restaurant... that is just ridiculous!

Then he had an opportunity to model in Milan, but couldn't because he had traffic warrants. So he had to remain in Wisconsin. Now if that is not dumb... what is?

What coulda Been: Tyson Beckford

Did you know male supermodel Tyson Beckford was considered to play Angela Bassett's "kept" young man in the movie "How Stella Got Her Groove Back"? The movie was which is based on the author Terry McMillan's real life story on how she found love in Jamaica with a man 20 years her junior. Many say that this role launched the career of the actor Taye Diggs, who played Bassett's sexy Jamaican love interest. Although Tyson has appeared in several movies, he hasn't received a role that would elevate him to the leading man category. That could be because of the stereotype that goes along with modeling -- which is: Models can't do anything but look pretty. But... if Tyson would have landed the role, he might have been able to crush that myth.

E television and VH1 have both named Gisele Bunchen the hottest supermodel. Gisele beat out some of the biggest names in the fashion industry like Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Adriana lima, Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen, and many other well known supermodels. Gisele is also the highest paid supermodel to date. E was quoted as saying that Gisele is so hot that she should not be referred to as a supermodel but at a Boobermodel.

Is Gisele the new Cindy? And will there be any newcomers that receive the same amount of exposure and money that Gisele is getting? Will there be a brand new group of models to bring back the "supermodel" age? And if so, we will start calling them "boobermodels" instead of the term we usually call them which is ... Supermodel?!

Who knows!

Only time will tell! I guess we will all have to stay tuned and see!
